The District Attorney Investigates the Deaths with Spears

The Orellana Prosecution began yesterday after a prior inquiry to investigate the death of Sandra Zabala and her son and daughter Byron and Tatiana.

They belonged to the jungle community of Los Reyes, located 80 km from Francisco de
Orellana.

On Monday, when Zabala and her sons and daughter went to school in the area to enroll
the little ones in the new school year, they were surprised by a group of naked people.

They attacked them with spears, which are believed to belong to the Taromenane tribe (people not contacted). Zabala was pierced by 10 spears, Byron by five and Tatiana by three. A six-month old baby was kidnapped, but was found the day before yesterday in the forest, at one kilometer.

Over Jaramillo, district attorney of Orellana, said that they did a reconnaissance of the place where the tragedy occurred and they received the different stories from the relatives of the victims.

Meanwhile, a delegation with representatives from the Ministries of the Environment, Heritage and the Government talked with the communities that are close to the site of the attack and they fear more deaths. They agreed to the transferring of residents to the Plan 2000 community, while [the delegation] implements a contingency plan in the area.

Marlon Santi, president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), proposed that the activities of the oil companies operating in the area be suspended. However up until the close of this story they have still not yet made a decision.

La Fiscalía indaga las muertes con lanzas

La Fiscalía de Orellana abrió ayer una indagación previa para investigar la muerte de Sandra Zabala y de sus hijos Byron y Tatiana.

Ellos pertenecían a la comunidad selvática de los Reyes, ubicada a 80 kilómetros de Francisco de Orellana.

El lunes, cuando Zabala y sus hijos iban a la escuela de la zona para matricular a los pequeños por el nuevo año lectivo, fueron sorprendidos por un grupo de personas desnudas.

Ellos los atacaron con lanzas, que se creen pertenecen a la tribu taromenane (pueblo no contactado). Zabala fue atravesada por 10 lanzas, Byron por cinco y Tatiana por tres. Un bebé de seis meses fue secuestrado, pero fue encontrado anteayer en la selva, a 1 kilómetro.

Over Jaramillo, fiscal de Orellana, dijo que ya se hizo el reconocimiento del lugar donde ocurrió la tragedia y que se receptaron las versiones de los familiares de las víctimas.

De forma paralela, una delegación con representantes de los ministerios del Ambiente, Gobierno y Patrimonio dialogaron con las comunidades que están cerca del sitio del ataque y que temen por más muertes. Acordaron el traslado de los habitantes a la comunidad Plan 2 000, mientras se implementa un plan de contingencia en la zona.

Marlon Santi, presidente de la Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie), propuso que las actividades de las petroleras que operan en el lugar también se suspendan. Pero hasta el cierre de esta edición aún no se tomaba una decisión.
