4 Waorani Arrested in Orellana for a Robbery

Four indigenous Waorani were arrested in the province of Orellana. The arrest took place on July 26th in the oil block 16, operated by the Spanish oil company Repsol YPF.

According to the report from police chief Jorge Campaña, the Waorani were arrested before they arrived at the offices of the Judicial Police (PJ) in Coca. They were accompanied by Édgar Guzmán, a security guard for the oil company.

Guzmán found the four indigenous people demonstrating against the use of military personnel patrolling in the south of Pompeya. “They were in a canoe, on the Napo River, carrying two sacks of copper belonging to Repsol,” says the report.

The arrested are: Nantowe O., Santiago O., Wane B., and Jorge T., all from the community Dicaro, located within the oil block. They remain imprisoned in the PJ jail in Orellana (Coca). The report indicated that the four did not show bruises or other signs of physical maltreatment when they arrived at PJ.

In a press release, Araba Omehuai, chief of the community Dicaro, asked among other things that the four be immediately released.

Federico Cruz, spokesman of the oil company, confirmed that the seized material did belong to Repsol. “We hope this matter will be resolved today [Thursday] or tomorrow. It is not the company’s intention to keep the Waorani detained, and they will not be charged.”
