No Trace of the Tagaeri in the Intangible Zone

The story that six people were killed in a confrontation between loggers and ethnic Tagaeri-Taromenane, in the Cononaco Chico area ( Chiripuno River) in Yasuní ( Orellana Province), is causing controversy.

Vicente Enomenga, President of the Organization of the Waorani Nationality (ONWAE), explained that three loggers and an equal number of Tagaeri were killed.

The Army and the Police that on Friday arrived at the site via air and water denied this and said that they are speculations.

The statements of the leader were substantiated in a phone call that he received from a Waorani leader in the community of Ñoneno.

He told me that three loggers were speared and an equal number of indigenous people were shot. “Since then no leader has communicated with me.”

The indigenous leader is waiting to meet with the authorities to make decision, such as how to stop logging through controls and delimitation of the Intangible Zone.

The members of the Police and Military, who traveled to the location of the alleged confrontation, assured that they didn’t find anything, despite having flown over in a helicopter.

According to them, they arrived at the site by boat, but there was no trace of the confrontation. Yesterday, starting at 10:30AM, a work session was held in the Napo 19 th Jungle Brigade.

The meeting was attended by the Defense Minister, Oswaldo Jarrín; the Environment Minister, Ana Albán; the commander of the Napo Brigade. Miguel Fuertes; the governor of Orellana, Angel Aldana; and the Capuchin priest, Juan Carlos Anduela, among other functionaries.

There they named two commissions: the first to fly over and search the area, with the hope of finding more bodies. The second is to determine the area of logging and define coordinates for the boundary of the Intangible Zone.

Up to the close of this edition, the commissions hadn’t returned. Juan Carlos Andueza, the Capuchin priest of the Vicariato Apostólico in Aguarico, Orellana, explained that the alleged massacre of between 6 and 30 Tagaeri-Taromenane is speculation.

The abovementioned version is not confirmed by the Police and Armed Forces. They searched the zone and didn’t find anything. Additionally, the injured did not arrive at the welfare houses in Orellana.

The priest showed worry over what had happened with the uncontacted communities. Despite the decree that creates an intangible zone, it is not delimited.

“Since the killings in 2003 nothing has changed in the zone and the violation of the territory continues. They should be left to live in peace.”

He remembers the confrontations that occurred before, 110 km from Orellana. The wood was gone and logging worsened along the banks of the Chiripuno and Cononaco Rivers.

The Confrontations

The directors of the hospitals and clinics of Orellana, Napo and Sucumbíos, when consulted by this newspaper, mentioned that they had not received any patient with spear or bullet wounds.

In June of 2003, 14 Tagaeri were murdered. The killings are attributed to loggers. In the site today there are several camps.

On April 12, another confrontation was caused by loggers’ incursions into the zone. Two people were speared and one of them died after an operation.

Los tagaeri sin rastro en la Zona Intangible

La versión de que seis personas habrían muerto en un choque entre madereros y la etnia tagaeri-taromenane, en el área Cononaco Chico (río Chiripuno) en el Yasuní (Orellana), causa polémica.

Vicente Enomenga, presidente la Organización de Nacionalidades Wuaorani  (Onwae), explicó que tres madereros e igual número de tagaeris habrían muerto.

El Ejército y la Policía, que el viernes acudieron  al lugar vía aérea y fluvial,  desmienten y dicen  que son  especulaciones.

El criterio del dirigente se sustenta en la llamada telefónica que recibió de un dirigente de la comuna waorani de Ñoneno.

Me detalló que tres madereros murieron lanceados y,  por impacto de bala,  igual número de indígenas. “Desde entonces ningún dirigente se comunica conmigo”.

El líder indígena espera reunirse con  autoridades para adoptar decisiones, como impedir la tala,  a través de controles y la delimitación de la zona intangible.

Los miembros de la Policía y el Ejército, que recorrieron el lugar del supuesto enfrentamiento, aseguraron no encontrar  nada, pese a que sobrevolaron en helicóptero.

Según dicen, ingresaron al sitio vía fluvial, pero no hubo rastros. Ayer desde las 10:30, en la Brigada de Selva  19 Napo, se realizó una sesión de trabajo.

A la cita acudió el ministro de Defensa, Oswaldo Jarrín; la ministra del Ambiente, Ana Albán; el comandante de la Brigada Napo, Miguel Fuertes; el gobernador de Orellana, Angel Aldana; el sacerdote capuchino, Juan Carlos Anduela, entre otros funcionarios.

Ahí se nombraron  dos comisiones: la primera para sobrevolar y rastrear la zona, con la finalidad de encontrar los posibles cuerpos.  La segunda para determinar el área de la tala y definir las coordenadas de la zona intangible.
 
Hasta el cierre de esta edición, las comisiones no regresaban.
Juan Carlos Andueza, sacerdote capuchino del Vicariato Apostólico de Aguarico, en Orellana, explicó que es una especulación la supuesta matanza de entre seis y 30 tagaeri-taromenane.

Dicha versión no está  confirmada por la  Policía  y FF.AA. Rastrearon la zona y no encontraron nada. Además, los heridos no llegaron a las casas asistenciales de Orellana. El religioso mostró su preocupación por lo que sucede con los pueblos no contactados. Pese a existir un Decreto donde se crea la Zona Intangible, no se la delimita.

“Desde la matanza del 2003 nada ha cambiado en la zona y continúan violando su territorio. Hay que dejarles vivir en paz”.

Recordó que antes los enfrentamientos ocurrían, a 110 km de Orellana. La madera se terminó y la tala se acentuó en las riberas de los ríos Chiripuno y Cononaco. 

Los enfrentamientos

Los directores de los  hospitales y clínica de Orellana, Napo y Sucumbíos, consultados por este Diario, mencionaron que no recibieron ningún paciente con heridas de lanza o de bala.

En junio del 2003, otros 14 tagaeri  fueron asesinados. La mantaza se atribuye a los madereros. En este sitio ahora se levantan algunos  campamentos.

El pasado 12 de abril ocurrió otro enfrentamiento debido a las incursiones de madereros a la zona, allí dos personas fueron lanceadas  y uno de ellos murió luego de una operación.
