The Huaorani protest for their land

The impacts of oil activities, the work of the oil companies in Yasuni Park and the collective rights were analyzed by the leaders of 34 Huaorani communities of Orellana, Napo and Pastaza.

During the meeting, the Huaorani leaders explained that the oil exploitation in their territory brought poverty and sickness to their people. The children suffer parasites, gastrointestinal sicknesses and infections of the skin. However, in some communities there are no clinics.

In addition, the hunting, the fishing and agriculture are scarce, all because of the environmental contamination and the destruction of the forest.

To this problem is added that the oil companies want to raid the territory with the help of the military. Due to this conflict, 200 families can not enter their ancestral establishments in the Huaorani communities of Decaro, Timpoca … “In the route to enter these settlements a control was constructed and it prevents the people to walk freely. This brought inconveniences and almost confrontations into the community,” said Alicia Cahuya, leader of Huaorani women.

Therefore, in the assembly they adopted definitive resolutions that will have to be respected by the authorities and the oil companies Maxus and Repsol YPF.

With these companies, the Huaorani have signed agreements for the improvement of health, education and the care of the environment.

In addition, the creation of productive micro companies. “Nevertheless, they don’t fulfill their commitments,” explained Alicia Cahuya.

She also mentioned that weeks prior, there were confrontations with members of the oil company. “They threatened us with a machete and when the village came out in defense, the military held a member of the community.”

For this, the Organization of Nationalities Huaorani of Ecuador (ONAHE) protects their territory.

They demand to the State the respect to the rights consecrated in the Constitution and in the Agreement 169 of OIT.

In the meantime, Jose Prano, from Accion Ecologica, said that the oil companies Perenco, EnCana, AGIP, Repsol, Petrobras, Petroecuador, and Pretrosur work within the Huaorani territory. “They can not work within the Yasuni National Park because it is a protected area.” In spite of the discords, in the last few days the Huaorani met with Petrobras. The agreements of the negotiations are still unknown.

Los Huaorani Protestan por Sus Tierras

Los impactos de la actividad hidrocarburífera, el trabajo de las petroleras en el Parque Yasuní y los derechos colectivos fueron analizados por los dirigentes de 34 comunidades huaoranis de Orellana, Napo y Pastaza.

Durante la reunión, los dirigentes Huaos explicaron que la explotación petrolera en su territorio trajo miseria y enfermedades para su pueblo. Los niños sufren parasitosis, enfermedades gastrointestinales e infecciones en la piel. Sin embargo en algunas comunidades no hay dispensarios.

Además, la caza, la pesca y la agricultura escasean, todo por la contaminación ambiental y la destrucción del bosque.

A este problema se suma que las petroleras quieren incursionar en  el territorio con ayuda de los militares.  Por este conflicto, 200 familias no pueden ingresar a sus  asentamientos ancestrales en las comunas huaorani de Decaro, Timpoca... “En la vía de ingreso a estos poblados se construyó un control y se  impide que la gente camine libremente. Eso trajo inconvenientes y casi enfrentamientos en la comunidad”, dijo Alicia Cahuya, dirigente de la Mujer Huaorani.

Por esta razón, en la asamblea se adoptaron resoluciones definitivas que deberán ser respetadas por las autoridades y las petroleras  Maxus y Repsol YPF.

Con estas compañías se firmó convenios para el mejoramiento de la salud, educación y el cuidado del ambiente.

Además, la creación de microempresas productivas. “Sin embargo no cumplen”, explicó Alicia Cahuya.

Mencionó también que semanas atrás, hubo enfrentamientos entre miembros de la petrolera. “Ellos nos amenazaron con machete y cuando el pueblo salió en defensa, los militares detuvieron a un miembro de la comunidad”.

Por ello, la Organización de Nacionalidades Huaoranis del Ecuador (Onahe) protege  su territorio.
Ellos demandan al Estado el respeto a los derechos consagrados en la Constitución y en el Convenio 169 de la OIT. 

Entre tanto, José Proaño, de la Fundación Acción Ecológica, dijo que las empresas petroleras Perenco, EnCana, AGIP, Repsol, Petrobras, Petroecuador y Pretrosur, trabajan dentro del territorio huaorani.  “Ellos no pueden trabajar dentro del  Parque Nacional Yasuní porque es un  área protegida”. Pese a los desacuerdos, en días pasados se reunieron con Petrobras. Aún se desconocen los acuerdos de las negociaciones.
