Plants

As this map of global plant diversity indicates, the region where the Amazon meets the Andes in Ecuador is one of the richest parts of the world. Yasuní National Park is one of the few places in the world that supports 4,000 plant species per 10,000 km 2. Yasuní has over 2,200 species of trees, 450 species of lianas (woody vines), over 300 species of epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants without being parasitic, such as orchids and bromeliads), and 800 species of ferns and understory herbs. Just to the west of Yasuní, the cloudforests of Ecuador are one of just five regions in the world known to support 5,000 plant species per 10,000 km 2.

For more information on global plant diversity, check out the research of the Nees-Intsitut at www.nees.uni-bonn.de/biomaps/biomaps.htm. This research group will have an updated map of global plant diversity out this year.
